Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems (+Solutions)

This user-friendly and highly readable book presents the basic and intermediate level treatment of modern digital and analog communication systems. The basics of communication systems without using probabilistic concepts are introduced first. With this solid base, the students are ready to master the probabilistic concepts introduced in later chapters. The great strength of the book is in its superb pedagogical style. The book consistenly does an excellent job of explaining difficult concepts clearly, using prose as well as mathematics. Every effort is made to give an intuitive insight-rather than just proofs- as well as heuristic explanations of theoretical results, wherever possible. The clear explanations, the well-chosen examples tp clarify the abstract mathematical results, and excellent illustrations make this text highly informative and easily accessible to an average student. One of the aims in writing this text has been to make learning a pleasant or at least a less intimidating experience for the student by presenting the subject in a clear, understandable, and logically organized manner.

Lathi's trademark user-friendly and highly readable text presents a complete and modern treatment of communication systems. It begins by introducing students to the basics of communication systems without using probabilistic theory. Only after a solid knowledge base--an understanding of how communication systems work--has been built are concepts requiring probability theory covered. This third edition has been thoroughly updated and revised to include expanded coverage of digital communications. New topics discussed include spread-spectrum systems, cellular communication systems, global positioning systems (GPS), and an entire chapter on emerging digital technologies (such as SONET, ISDN, BISDN, ATM, and video compression). Ideal for the first communication systems course for electrical engineers, Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems offers students a superb pedagogical style; it consistently does an excellent job of explaining difficult concepts clearly, using prose as well as mathematics. The author makes every effort to give intuitive insights--rather than just proofs--as well as heuristic explanations of theoretical results wherever possible. Featuring lucid explanations, well-chosen examples clarifying abstract mathematical results, and excellent illustrations, this unique text is highly
informative and easily accessible to students.

Summary: excellent book on communication theroy
    Rating: 5
This is a great book for building the foundations of communication theory. Serves great as an introductory text on analog and digital communications. Concepts are explained very well.
Summary: One of the best Comm Books
    Rating: 5
I read this book for 2 of my semesters in my undergrad. In the beginning I didn't like the book much but today all that what I got from this book is helping me back in my Grad studies. One of the finest. Much better than many around.
Summary: Never found anything better explained
    Rating: 5
My only concern about this book is that I have discovered it too late, after graduating in electronic engineering! Really, many explanations that Prof. Lathi gives about Shannon, Nyquist, and the exchange of bandwidth for SNR, both intuitive and rigorous, would have helped me very much at that time.
I really recommend this book for several reasons:
    1) Clarity
    2) examples
    3) Historical background for the development of analog and digital communications.
I hope Lathi will write many other books like this one: I've never found any explanation better than his. He makes you love the subject.
Summary: The best book for engineers on communication systems
    Rating: 5
The nice thing about this textbook is that it provides the needed background in probability and random processes. The first nine chapters discuss in detail how digital and analog communication systems work. Chapter 1 is an introduction to communications systems, and signal analysis is covered in chapters 2 and 3. Here the student is encouraged to see a signal as a vector and to think of the Fourier spectrum as a way of representing a signal in terms of its vector components. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss amplitude and then angular modulation. In the digital age many might feel that modulation should be deemphasized. However, modulation is a basic tool of signal processing and its understanding is therefore still necessary. Chapter 6 deals with sampling, pulse code modulation, and delta modulation. Chapter 7 discusses the transmission of digital data while chapters 8 and 9 discuss emerging digital technologies in communications as they were considered cutting edge in 1998. Chapters 10 and 11 are the promised chapters on probability and random processes, sufficient to the point of understanding what is covered in this book. Chapters 12 and 13 discuss the behavior of communication systems in the presence of noise. Optimum signal detection is the subject of chapter 14, and information theory is introduced in chapter 15. Error control coding is the subject of the final chapter of the book.
The best features of this book are its visual style with plenty of diagrams and also its numerous worked out numerical examples. The mathematics is as complex as necessary to explain concepts, but the author doesn't lose sight of the forest for the trees in this aspect of the book. Exercises include not only traditional numerical type problems but computer exercises as well. Although there are entire books written on what this book covers in chapters, particularly in the last half of the book when the author is surveying topics rather than laying foundations, this is a good first book to read even on these advanced topics as far as getting the big picture and seeing how these topics tie into the design of communication systems. Highly recommended.

    GPS: Theory, Algorithms and Applications

This reference and handbook describes theory, algorithms and applications of the Global Positioning System (GPS/Galileo). It is primarily based on source-code descriptions of the KSGsoft program developed by the author at the GFZ in Potsdam. The theory and algorithms are extended and verified for a new development of a multiple functional GPS/Galileo software. Besides the concepts such as the unified GPS data processing method and the numerical solution of the variation equations, as well as the general ambiguity search criteria reported in the first edition, there are several highlights reported. Such as the equivalent principle and its applications, the theory of independent parameterisation, the diagonalisation algorithm, etc. Mathematically rigorous, the book begins with the basics of coordinate and time systems and satellite orbits, as well as GPS observables, and deals with topics such as physical influences, observation equations and their parameterisation, adjustment and filtering, ambiguity resolution, data processing, and the determination of perturbed orbits.

Understanding the GPS: An Introduction to the Global Positioning System

There is an ever-growing supply of information about the Global Positioning System. Unfortunately, these new (and now, some not so new) documents seem to be located at each end of the comprehension scale: either at the "gee-whiz" level which basically describes how interesting and useful this new utility is, or at the engineer's level which starts out with Keplerian orbits and Hopfield Modeling. What seems to be missing is a comprehensive, yet easy to understand, presentation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) for people who may have a very real need to apply this new technology but lack the basic understanding necessary to make important, and often expensive, decisions about it. Thus this book.
This book is designed to support an introductory course on the fundamentals of the Global Positioning System based on a series of graphic representations and distilled concept-bullets. Math is scrupulously avoided-that level of information is readily available through numerous highly technical publications and is no more necessary for most users than is a textbook on electronics necessary for the purchaser of a television set.
Each concept is presented in one to four graphics found in this book on the left page of each page-pair. The opposing right page presents a brief discussion of the concept. While much more could be said on each of the topics presented, only those highlights considered by the author to be of most immediate value to the geographer, project manager, field technician, or others needing to learn the fundamentals of the GPS are included here. At the end of the book, there is a list of suggested readings for those who are interested in gathering more in-depth and detailed information on most of the topics covered.

Global Positioning Systems, Inertial Navigation and Integration

This book is organized for use as a text for an introductory course in GPS technology at the senior level or as a first-year graduate level course in GPS, INS, and Kalman filtering.
It provides engineers, computer scientists, and others with a working familiarity with the theory and contemporary applications of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Inertial Navigational Systems (INS), and Kalman filters. Throughout, the focus is on solving real-world problems, with an emphasis on the effective use of state-of-the-art integration techniques for those systems, especially the application of Kalman filtering.
To that end, the authors explore the various subtleties, common failures, and inherent limitations of the theory as it applies to real-world situations, and provide numerous detailed application examples and practice problems, including GPS-aided INS, modeling of gyros and accelerometers, and WAAS and LAAS.

Communicating and Mobile Systems: the Pi-Calculus

    Review
"The monograph is short, self-contained, and extremely readable. It covers all the important points in enough detail for the subtleties involved to be understood, while still being general enough that the material is applicable to other concurrent calculi variants..." Professor Riccardo Pucella, Cornell University
"The presentation is remarkably self-contained and clear...an excellent reference for researchers in the field." Mathematical Reviews
    Product Description
Communication is a fundamental and integral part of computing, whether between different computers on a network, or between components within a single computer. In this book Robin Milner introduces a new way of modelling communication that reflects its position. He treats computers and their programs as themselves built from communicating parts, rather than adding communication as an extra level of activity. Everything is introduced by means of examples, such as mobile phones, job schedualers, vending machines, data structures, and the objects of object-oriented programming. But the aim of the book is to develop a theory, the pi-calculus, in which these things can be treated rigorously. The pi-calculus differs from other models of communicating behaviour mainly in its treatment of mobility. The movement of a piece of data inside a computer program is treated exactly the same as the transfer of a message--or indeed an entire computer program--across the internet. One can also describe networks which reconfigure themselves. The calculus is very simple but powerful; its most prominent ingredient is the notion of a name. Its theory has two important ingredients: the concept of behavioural (or observational) equivalence, and the use of a new theory of types to classify patterns of interactive behaviour. The internet, and its communication protocols, fall within the scope of the theory just as much as computer programs, data structures, algorithms and programming languages. This book is the first textbook on the subject; it has been long-awaited by professionals and will be welcome by them, and their students.
