A godown (warehouse) is to be built in the new industrial area being established at the Darwin end of the Darwin-Alice Springs Railway on a site close to both the rail-head and the shipping terminal to be used for handling produce to and from East Timor and South East Asia.

The topography of the area is flat with a building height restriction of 15m. The design specifies large clear internal spans for maximum flexibility in the use of the building. The design also specifies a steel frame building on a concrete slab-on-ground reinforced concrete floor using prefabricated steel trusses, supported on columns, acting as roof beams. The flat roof is to have a pitch of approximately 20. Natural lighting is essential but only on the southern side because of the hot tropical sun and its effect on the airconditioning which must be allowed to operate efficiently. The overall dimensions of the warehouse are to be Lm long by Wm wide span with an internal height at its lowest point of 8m.
Orientation on the flat site is your choice with an access requirement of 2 roller shutter doors on each long side and one roller shutter door at each end. Details of suitable bracing systems for wind and stability are to be determined by you, the designer. It is to be designed with local manufacturers in mind who have with limited resources, by using prefabricated trusses. However, care should be taken to produce an aesthetically pleasing structure.

The frames and its members are to be connected by a suitable bracing system. The roofing and wall cladding are to be supported using cold-formed steel purlins and girts and all are to be specified by you.The walls are covered by steel sheeting except for the 6m high x 4.8m wide openings fitted with roller shutter doors mentioned above. It can be assumed that all foundations and floor with column fixing bolts have been completed under another contract.
