    LUBRICATION THEORY
    Introduction
Back in the spring of '98, one of our Biomedical Engineering faculty ( Professor Foy ) came by to guest host my Intermediate Fluid Mechanics course. Because her research expertise is in Bio-Tribology, I became inspired to write up these pages on lubrication theory for one of my Flow of the Week entries.
In general, tribology is the study of friction and wear and plays an important role in most mechanical designs. In fact, nearly all mechanical engineers are introduced to this topic in their junior level machine design courses.
The most common way to prevent wear is through lubrication, the theory of which is a subtopic within tribology as well as a subtopic within fluid mechanics. The idea of lubrication is to maintain a liquid or grease layer between moving solid surfaces. It turns out that the stresses in this layer are what keep the surfaces separated.
The typical problem in lubrication theory is the journal bearing sketched above. In essence, this is a shaft whirling inside of an outer cylinder. You can find such a configuration in your automobile's engine. The crankshaft is the shaft and the main bearing is the outer cylinder. Your automobile's camshaft(s) is(are) another example. Lateral loads such as that sketched in the figure are frequently applied either unintentionally or by design. The latter case typically occurs when the journal bearing is part of a device which converts translational motion into rotational motion or vice versa. Examples of such devices include your automobile engine or the crank arm-chain ring mechanism on your bicycle. The lateral load can cause the shaft to contact the outer cylinder and the issue of (solid-solid) friction and wear becomes obvious. It is intuitively obvious that the surfaces will come into contact if there is no rotation of the shaft. It is the motion of the lubricant in the gap and the resultant production of normal stresses which keeps the solid surfaces separated. A (partial) free body diagram (FBD) depicting the normal forces is sketched at the left. The standard theory discussed in machine design courses was first developed by Osborne Reynolds (the fellow with the number) in 1886. Click here for an overview of Reynolds' lubrication theory.

    Autolub

Autolub is a battery motorized lubricator you can adjust the time needed for example if you want to lubricate a bearing for a whole year you can adjust the autolub for 12 month and you can trust the autolub to give the quantity of the cap which is 100 ml along the year this is good for many reason and you can check if the auto is running well it flashes a red light indicats some thing wrong you can find it at McMaster catalouge Simple to use to assembly to maintaine no additional or wast in grease
You can also find alot of autolubrication system if you go to LINCOLN site i dont know the page you can fide alot
auto lubrication reduce maintenance time and lift up preformance of the machine
i hope you like the subject

    Self lubricated bushes

Some times you can find places of rotating shaft with oscillating movement for that they use a special bush called boston bronze bush come with graphite for self greasing Why because sometimes you cant reach to grease or you may forget to grease then you let the box to burn
I dont know do you think its usefull
