Tension PVC Fabric membrane
The PVC fabric membrane is manufactured by Ferrari SA in France using their patented Précontraint® technology.
Throughout the entire manufacturing process the fabric membrane is subjected to a pre-stressing treatment of one metric tonne per metre and both sides of the woven polyester base cloth receive a thick coating of UV stabilised PVC; this combination provides a highly stable material in both the warp and weft directions.
Précontraint® treatment provides the material with both a long life expectancy and exceptional dimensional stability.
Longevity tests on this material were commissioned from a recognised German testing organisation TÜV, including the effects of tensioning, UV degradation, pollution and their effect on loss of tensile strength and therefore the material’s safety coefficient.
After 18 years use TÜV have stated from the test to date that: “under normal conditions of use, a life expectancy of 25 years is confirmed”.
Buildings having the original fabric membrane are still in use after 30 years; if necessary after many years the steel framework can easily be refurbished with a new PVC fabric membrane to resemble a brand new building.
Old fabric membranes can be recycled at the end of their lifespan using the Ferrari Vinyloop™ process.
The frame is made from steel trusses and longitudinal secondary rafters, manufactured from square hollow section to EN 10025 and welded to EN 25817 and EN 729 to give a substantial framework of indefinite expected life.
The steel sections are shot blasted and epoxy painted with a Grey Eggshell finish, alternatively the framework can be hot dipped galvanised to EN ISO 1461 for specific applications.
The shot blasted paint finish is normally specified as a completely smooth, burr free finish is guaranteed - this is beneficial for tensioning the fabric membrane cover over and ensures no wear points will develop over the life span of the membrane covering.
The method of foundation fixing is determined by the size of the building and the ground conditions on site.
Buildings up to 50m span can be anchored to existing asphalt or concrete surfaces; the Best-Hall ground anchor system uses steel rods pneumatically driven into asphalt at varying angles to depths of 1.2m; expansion or chemical anchors bolts are used on concrete.
For buildings 50m to 100m span, a concrete ring beam around the entire perimeter of the building is recommended.
Loadings are provided so that a suitable foundation may be designed for each site, accommodating soil strengths.
Stanchion base plates are cast into the ring beam ready for the building to be fixed.
The PVC fabric membrane has a skirt section at ground level, which is bonded to the existing surface with a bitumen-type product, to provide a reliable weatherproof seal.
Erection and fixing is carried out by our highly skilled installation teams; Collinson are members of the National Britannia SAFE contractor scheme.
Due to their pre-engineered design Besthall buildings can be erected quickly on site, eg. a building 1,500m² can be installed and ready for use in 2 weeks and a building 4000m² in around 5 weeks.
However speedy construction belies the permanence of these structures: the long life of the materials and the strength of the anchorage combine to give extremely durable yet attractive buildings.
