You are responsible for the setup of the central administration network. The previous IT manager did not graduate from a good university like you. Therefore, everyone was complaining about the bad performance of the network and the lack of security in
it. Each other day the finance administration computers get hacked and information are lost. Even the general manager is not safe, someone broke into his computer and took photos of him in swim suite and published them on the website of the bank. The GM had to resign, along with the chief finance officer, and off course (you should have already guessed) the IT manager!!
The current network is organized as follows: We have an six floors building, in which departments are distributed over 2 or three floors each. The following table shows the distribution of rooms in each floor. Each room contains 2 network ports.
Each floor is equipped with one 24 ports Fast Ethernet switch and 2 GbE ports. The Giga bit ports are used to connect switches following this rule:
1- A central switch is being put in the basement; it contains 24 GbE ports, with a switching capacity of 30 Gbps.
2- Each switch is connected with one GbE link to the central switch. The other GbE is used to link with one of the other switches. Each two switches are connected together: 1st floor with 2nd floor, 3rd with 4th, and 5th with 6th.
3- Rooms are distributed from the left of the table to the right (e.g : in the 1st floor, rooms 1-5 are for IT dept. and rooms 6-9 are for Management, in 4th floor, rooms 1-4 are for Finance dept., and rooms 5-7 are for Admin dept etc.
Q1- Use a good graphical tool (e.g. Visio) to provide a well presented plan of the network. You need to draw the switches of each floor and their connections with each other and with the central switch.
Q2- Using the previously described rules and the diagram of Q1, display the spanning tree of the network if all links are working correctly. What would happen if the link between the 3rd floor switch and the central switch is damaged? Display the resulting spanning tree on the diagram. Explain in details the different steps of the spanning tree algorithm.
Q3- Propose a division of the network into VLANs so each division has its own VLAN. Explain how the VLANs would span over several switches.
The reach people's bank has five branches
A central one that we studied in part one is located in Hamraa Street, other branches are located in Mazzeh, Dummar, Muhajreen, and Kassaa
All these branches are connected to each other via Leased lines using RIP as routing protocol.
