Robotics and manufacturing research


Dr. Jan Huissoon's research in robotic laser welding has led to the identification of end-of-arm sensor and tool centre point calibration as being a critical aspect of successful system implementation. End-of-arm sensing, in the context of robotic welding, is used to detect the actual position of the seam on the workpiece with respect to the robot tool frame. Dr. Huissoon uses an MVS laser profiling sensor located ahead of the tool centre point. Analysis of the profile data yields the relative position of the workpiece feature of interest (the seam) with respect to the sensor reference frame. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is home to Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. It is one of thirteen departments in the University of Minnesota's Institute of Technology (IT). IT includes mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering, a structure that is highly effective at fostering multidisciplinary research and education. For many years, Mechanical Engineering has been ranked among the top ten ME departments nationally. Our Industrial Engineering program is growing and rapidly gaining national and international recognition with leading faculty in several key areas. Each year we grant about 200 BS, 50 MS and 20 PhD degrees.

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering


The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University is home to such diverse activities as biomechanics, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, control, manufacturing, energy systems, MEMS, and nanotechnology.

The department offices and laboratories are housed within the first and second floors of the S. W. Mudd Building on Columbia's Morningside campus. We have recently added new laboratories in the areas of nanotechnology, optical nanostructures, and fracture and crack mechanics, as well as new facilities in the fields of robotics and automation and control.

The undergraduate program is ABET accredited and allows students to take electives within the department, at Columbia College, and in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Students at all levels are encouraged to participate in our cutting-edge research labs, and to join clubs such as the ASME, Solar-Splash, SAE, and AIAA.
