This dynamic shear banding finite-element calculation
shows that microstructures develop within a macroshear band in a tantalum bar. Professor Jean-Francois Molinari's calculations demonstrate that
the collapsing deformation pattern may exhibit rathermore complex structure.
The figure reveals that the
initial shear band breaks up and spawns two daughter bands. It is also interesting to note that the nucleation of the sub-bands is not homogeneous.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is currently conducting a search for a new tenure-track faculty member to fill a FACULTY POSITION in the area of Mechanics and Materials.
• 4/25/07 Dr Raul B. Cal of the Turbulence Research Group has been awarded a prestigious Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship, for his postdoctoral research on wind-turbine - turbulence interactions.
• 4/4/07 Debbi Donhauser, Administrative Manager is the recipient of the 2007 Whiting School of Engineering Staff Service Award. The annual award is given to one staff member in the entire school in recognition of outstanding service in support of the educational and research activities of the Whiting School, its departments, and the university. • 4/3/07 The National Science Foundation has awarded NSF Fellowships to graduate students Amy Blank, Tom Wedlick, and Rika Wright; and undergraduate students Rebecca Kramer and Mary Wu. NSF Fellowship honorable mentions were awarded to undergraduate students Joe Romano and Tim Rupert.
• 4/2/07 The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships to graduate student Tom Wedlick and undergraduate student Mary Wu.



• 2/9/07 Prof. Noah Cowan's recent paper in the Journal of Neuroscience was rated as a "Must Read" by two members of the Faculty of 1000. The paper, coauthored with Neuroscientist Eric Fortune, was a recent feature in the JHU Gazette, and is part of an ongoing NSF-funded collaboration.
